Cytokines Play Vital Role in Etiology

Levels of cytokines, proteins used by the body as signalling devices, are correlated with the severity of several infectious diseases, including African trypanomiasis, researchers report.

A. Sharafeldin and colleagues with the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a study to "evaluate the early induction of five potential cytokines in the central nervous system (CNS) and spleens from Trypanosoma brucei brucei (T. b. brucei)-inoculated and uninfected control Sprague-Dawley rats."
