Outbreak Study in Minnesota Outlines Strategies to Avoid Unnecessary Testing

Public health investigators detected an outbreak of pertussis in a rural area of Minnesota in the winter of 1998. As a result of epidemiological investigation conducted during that outbreak, new strategies have been outlined that show the best way to administer prophylactic treatment and at the same time avoid unnecessary testing of potential contacts.

During the outbreak, 186 patients with suspected cases of pertussis were identified. One hundred and seventy six of those patients were evaluated for clinical and laboratory evidence of pertussis as well as history of contact exposure and vaccination.
