WHO, CDC Respond to Outbreak in Uganda

On October 17, 2000, as part of the World Health Organization's (WHO) response to an outbreak of viral hemorrhagic fever, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sent a team of six disease investigators to Uganda.

Laboratory tests conducted at the National Institute of Virology in South Africa indicate that the Ebola virus is the cause of the outbreak. Ebola is a severe, often-fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates.

The CDC team of medical epidemiologists and virologists will assist the Ugandan Ministry of Health first in controlling the outbreak in Gulu. The team will work to break the chain of disease transmission by...
