Cerebrospinal Fluid Assays Identify Herpesvirus Infections

Viral infections can cause a number of neurological manifestations, including meningitis and encephalitis. A report in the Journal of Neurovirology says that diagnostic laboratories, which are often constrained by time and cost factors, can routinely use DNA amplification procedures to diagnose herpesvirus infections in patients with virus-associated neurological diseases.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a laboratory technique that amplifies genetic sequences of biological samples. This technique enables infectious microbial agents to be amplified and then further identified with a high degree of specificity.
