Typhoid Vaccination Recommended for Short-Term Travel

Vaccination for typhoid fever should be considered for even short-term visits to high-risk areas, according to a report presented at the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Dr. Ellen Steinberg, of the Foodborne and Diarrheal Diseases Branch, National Center for Infectious Disease, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said, "In 1994, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice published guidelines for typhoid immunization which recommend typhoid vaccination for travelers to areas in which there is a recognized risk of exposure to Salmonella typhi, the bacterium that causes typhoid fever.
