Study Defines Best Way to Test Shellfish for Viral Contaminants

A comparative analysis of four methods for detecting viral contaminants, including hepatitis A virus, has shown that using a glycine buffer at a pH of 10.0 presents the best way to recover and analyze phages and viruses.

"Viral outbreaks attributed to the consumption of contaminated shellfish have been clearly demonstrated," remarked I. Munianinmujika and colleagues at the University of Barcelona in Spain in a discussion of their study ("Viral contamination of shellfish: Evaluation of methods and analysis of bacteriophages and human viruses," Journal of Virological Methods, 2000;89(1-2):109-118).
