Antibiotic Embedded Bone Cement Prevents Infections at Implant Sites in Rabbits

An antibiotic commonly used to prevent Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections can be mixed with bone cement and used to prevent infections at implant sites, according to new research to be published in the December 2000 edition of the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research.

Implantation sites stand a risk of becoming infected after the implantation process is completed. Antibiotics generally are administered as prophylactic treatments to mitigate the onset of infections. The new antibiotic-embedded bone cement could offer an alternative to systemic antibiotic therapies if it proves to be effective.
