Over 130 Medicines in the Works for Infectious Disease, Diseases of Aging

Results of a new survey show that 84 pharmaceutical companies are currently developing 137 new medicines to prevent and treat infectious diseases, according to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA).

"Infectious disease is humankind's oldest and most tenacious enemy," said Alan F. Holmer, PhRMA, in releasing the survey. "The industry's pipeline of weapons against infectious diseases gives cause for optimism in this ongoing battle."

The medicines currently in clinical trials or awaiting approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) include: 22 medicines to attack such viruses as hepatitis, herpesviruses, and...
