Linezolid Might Help Combat Resistant Bacteria

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs researchers and their colleagues have found that linezolid, the first of a new class of antibiotics, can cure many infections caused by bacteria known for their rapidly emerging resistance to commonly used antibiotics.

"We haven't had any totally new antibiotics in a long time," said first author Dennis L. Stevens, MD, PhD, Boise Veterans Affairs Medical Center and University of Washington School of Medicine. "Linezolid has an entirely different mechanism of action and looks like it can get some of the resistant bugs," he said. "It's a new cannon in our arsenal."
