Additional Rifampin-Resistant Strains Identified

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer -- Researchers in Germany have identified additional strains of tuberculosis resistant to rifampin and say a test to identify these resistant strains should be part of screening prior to treatment.

V176F is a mutation located on the rpoB gene that is associated with rifampin resistance. M. Heep and colleagues reported in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology on the prevalence of V176F in 80 strains of rifampin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated in 1997.
