BAL Neopterin May Be Novel Marker For TB And Lung Cancer Disease States

Researchers in Egypt say neopterin levels in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid may be a useful marker for disease activity in tuberculosis and some lung cancers.

Prior research has identified neopterin as a marker for "activation of the monocyte/macrophage axis in some clinical situations," said K.H. Mohamed and colleagues. "However, to our knowledge, the relationship of BAL neopterin levels to disease states has not been studied."
