Artesunate Influences Kidney Clearance

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - The anti-malaria drug sodium artesunate causes decreased clearance of inulin and increased urinary output of sodium, chloride, potassium, and nitric oxide metabolites, researchers report.

The drug's adverse effects have been unclear, probably because they are difficult to distinguish from the symptoms and signs of malaria itself. Now researchers in Brazil have clarified the effects of artesunate on renal function. Their findings were published in Kidney International.
