Short-Course, Two-Drug Treatment For Latent TB In High-Risk Inmates Leads To Higher Completion Rates

A new two-month, two-drug treatment for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) led to a marked increase in completion rates for the regimen in a high-risk jail population who had a positive tuberculin skin test, according to an article in the March 2001 issue of Chest.

Prison tuberculosis (TB) rates are six to 10 times higher than among the general public, the study notes.

For prisoners with LTBI, the current, most common treatment regimen usually lasts one year. However, since many of those who are incarcerated leave jail before completing their treatment, they return to the community with untreated LTBI. Also, a 25-site national survey...
