Test Offers Rapid, Accurate Detection Of Extrapulmonary Disease

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - A new test for the detection of extrapulmonary tuberculosis rivals Mycobacterium culture for accuracy, but works as quickly as the acid-fast bacilli smear.

If further studies of smear-negative, culture-positive samples verify its accuracy, the Gen-Probe Amplified Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Direct Test (MTD) may offer a significant advance in rapid detection of extrapulmonary TB.
