Harmful Bacteria Already Developing Resistance To Newest Drugs

Multi-drug resistant bacteria have caused enormous difficulties worldwide over the past few decades. Scientists had hoped, however, that new drugs currently available for prescription would help to suppress the emergence of super-bugs such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus that hit the British headlines last year.

But, research published by an American group in the April 14, 2001, issue of the Lancet suggests that these harmful bacteria have already built up a resistance to the newest drugs.

Linezolid is a new antibiotic, which received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration at the beginning of 2000. ...
