Mouse Relapse Reflects Inability To Localize Immune Response Within Lungs

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - The ability to contain infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis for the long term is tied to the ability to localize antigen-specific lymphocytes within the lung, Colorado State University microbiologists say.

J. Turner and colleagues observed that while different strains of mice all appeared to contain M. tuberculosis initially, some strains eventually experienced a relapse of the disease, while others consistently did not.

Among the mice that were resistant to relapse, the C57BL/6 strain showed a better lymphocyte response within the lungs compared with the CBA/J strain, one of the strains...
