Drug Resistance Patterns Remain Stable Among Canadian-Born Patients

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Despite changing trends in tuberculosis care, and a simultaneous shift in immigration patterns, drug resistance rates among Canadian-born patients have remained stable, according to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

R. Long and colleagues in Canada reviewed drug resistance surveys to determine the impact of managing TB patients on an outpatient basis as sanatorium care was phased out from 1963-1994. During the same time, immigration patterns changed, with a shift from Europe to Asia as the country of origin for most new immigrants.
