New PCR Method Distinguishes Between Invasive, Noninvasive Listeria Strains

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - A recently developed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test is able to discriminate between invasive and noninvasive strains of Listeria monocytogenes, suggesting differences in their DNA.

G. Franciosa and colleagues working in Italy compared the new infrequent-restriction-site PCR (IRS-PCR) with PCR-ribotyping and arbitrarily primed PCR (AP-PCR) in terms of their ability to characterize 32 L. monocytogenes strains (16 from an outbreak of invasive listeriosis and 16 from two outbreaks of noninvasive listeriosis, all three in Italy).

IRS-PCR showed better discrimination than the other two methods...
