Bulk Medicine-Buying Program Works For TB, Could Do Same For AIDS Drugs

A World Health Organization program that buys tuberculosis medicines in bulk at competitive prices is working well - with reductions of over 30% - and could serve as a model to help reduce costs of antiretroviral drugs against HIV/AIDS in poor countries.

The New York Times News Service quoted Dr. David L. Heymann, the executive director in charge of communicable diseases for the WHO, as saying of the TB program, "We did not suspect that there would be such price reductions." Before the program, a six-month supply of TB drugs cost WHO between US$15-20. With the market incentive of the program, that cost dropped to about $10, the News Service article said (Price of TB...
