Astrovirus Second Most Common Cause Among Hospitalized Children

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Astrovirus should be considered in the differential diagnosis of hospitalized children with diarrhea, particularly if they are young and did not initially present with gastroenteritis, say researchers working in Rhode Island.

Identifying astrovirus can eliminate the need for therapy beyond rehydration, noted P.H. Dennehy and colleagues.

In their five-year prospective study, Dennehy and team tested stool samples from hospitalized children younger than 10 for astrovirus, rotavirus, and enteric adenovirus.
