Short-Course Chemotherapy Can Work Well In Russia

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - The short-course chemotherapy regimen recommended for tuberculosis by the World Health Organization (WHO) could help stem the rising tide of TB in Russia, according to a new report in Lancet.

C. Mawer and colleagues with Medical Emergency Relief International, London, compared standard Russian anti-TB regimens with the WHO-endorsed treatment in 646 new cases presenting to the two largest TB diagnostic and treatment centers in Tomsk Oblast, western Siberia.

Patients were at least 18 years old and were assigned to receive traditional Russian treatments (n=356, 155 smear-positive) or WHO short-course...
