WHO Reports Elimination Goals Met In Africa

The African Region of the World Health Organization has achieved the Organization's goal for leprosy elimination, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Ebrahim M. Samba, reported.

"By the end of 2000, leprosy prevalence had dropped to 64,381 cases (i.e., 1.0 per 10,000 population) ... and this means that the elimination goal has been achieved in the Region", said Samba in his Annual Report released August 27, 2001. The Report was discussed at the 51st session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo.
