Confirmed Cases In Hawaii Rise To 40

Hawaii state Health Director Bruce Anderson briefed state lawmakers on the dengue fever outbreak, saying Hawaii has only seen "the tip of the iceberg.''

The number of confirmed cases of dengue fever rose to 40 statewide, with federal health officials confirming another case on Maui as the state began a public outreach campaign to urge Hawaii residents to eliminate mosquito breeding areas.

"For every confirmed case, studies have shown there are probably 100 other cases occurring that are not confirmed,'' Anderson said. "So often when you see an outbreak like this, you're seeing the tip of the iceberg.''
