Extrapulmonary Infection Can Present Extra Challenges

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - AIDS patients coinfected with extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) are likely to have different clinical profiles than patients presenting with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), researchers in California report.

Dr. Amy Rock Wahl and colleagues working with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services' HIV Epidemiology Program conducted a study to "compare the demographics, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) progression, and survival in persons with AIDS with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) versus extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB), because there are limited population-based data on this topic."
