Interferon-(gamma) Restrains Immune Response

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers in the United States and Europe say that interferon (IFN)-(gamma) plays an important but unexpected role in controlling tuberculosis infection.

"Interferon-(gamma) is a pivotal cytokine in the protective response to tuberculosis," according to Andrea M. Cooper and colleagues at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and the Borstel Research Center in Borstel, Germany. "While macrophage activation is key, this pleiotropic cytokine has other secondary but significant roles."
