Putatively Important Enzymes Not Exported But Leaked

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers in the United States say that two proteins found at high levels in tuberculosis cultures may not be as vital as previously thought.

"Glutamine synthetase (GS) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), large multimeric enzymes that are thought to play important roles in the pathogenicity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, are among the bacterium's major culture filtrate proteins in actively growing cultures," explained Marcus A. Horwitz and colleagues at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine.
