Dr. Richard Wunderink, Methodist Healthcare, Memphis, Tennessee, did not set out to be a researcher, but during his pulmonary and critical care fellowship training, frustration over why some patients died of pneumonia and others didn't started him on a career of studying pneumonia.

Pneumonia is basically an infection in the air sacs of the lungs and can be caused by a variety of microorganisms. The prognosis for patients with community-acquired pneumonia ranges from rapid recovery to rapid death, even when caused by the same microorganism.
