WHO Says Africa Has Scored Some Victories Against Polio's Spread

The World Health Organization Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Ebrahim M. Samba, says that the WHO African Region in 2001 recorded impressive results in the drive to eradicate polio, with the number of countries reporting wild poliovirus dropping from 11 in 2000 to 6 so far this year.

In addition, he adds, successful National Immunization Days (NIDs) have been conducted in all countries in the Region since the launch of the polio eradication initiative. Also, 24 countries attained certification level surveillance in 2001.
