Rifampicin Reduces Nevirapine Levels In Coinfected Patients

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - The antituberculosis drug rifampicin lowers in vivo levels of the antiretroviral agent nevirapine, researchers in Spain report.

Dr. Esteban Ribera and colleagues at the Autonomous University of Barcelona's Hospital Vall d'Hebron examined the pharmacokinetics of the two drugs in patients with HIV related tuberculosis.

Rifampicin significantly lowers peak nevirapine concentrations in these patients although the clinical relevance of this effect may be limited, Ribera and coworkers said.
