U.S. sees dramatic decline in chickenpox incidence

The introduction of the varicella vaccine in the U.S. in 1995 has resulted in a marked decline in varicella incidence, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

J.F. Seward and associates examined population-based disease surveillance data in three communities to document the impact of the varicella vaccination program. Before licensure of, there were 4 million cases, 11,000 hospitalizations, and 100 deaths every year.
