Scientists discuss microbial pathogenesis in era of bioterrorism, drug resistance

Even before the recent dual specters of bioterrorism and drug-resistant infections, scientists were beginning to recognize the potential impact of better understanding how bacteria and viruses interact with cells to cause disease.

This American Society for Investigative Pathology symposium on "hot topics in microbial pathogenesis" provided a look into five cutting-edge approaches to how pathogens get into the cell and cause their damage and what science can do about it, identifying better drug targets, even using the microbes themselves as weapons.
