Dr. Wataru Matsuyama and colleagues at Kagoshima University School of Medicine in Kagoshima and Ariake Medical Association Hospital in Ariake-cho Noikura conducted a study to "investigate the cellular source and significance of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) which, as reported previously, is elevated in the sera of pulmonary tuberculous patients."
Tuberculosis-induced VEGF production appears to be part of an immune response by CD4+ T cells, Matsuyams and coauthors found.
