Dendritic cells and macrophages show different responses to infection

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Different types of antigen-presenting cells (APCs) have different responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, researchers in the United States report.

"Th1-mediated cellular responses are important for protection in tuberculosis," according to Somia Perdow Hickman and colleagues at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York. "However, the mechanisms and APC types responsible for initiating Th1 responses are not well understood."
