Liquid media monitoring system may offer improvement over standard Japanese method

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - A liquid media system for monitoring the efficacy of tuberculosis treatment may offer an improvement over conventional Japanese techniques, researchers in Japan say.

Dr. N. Hasegawa and colleagues at the Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo and National Minami-Yokohama Hospital in Yokohama compared "the performance of a liquid medium system using the Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT) with that of the conventional Japanese culture system using egg-based Ogawa medium, equivalent to Löwenstein-Jensen medium, in cases with pulmonary tuberculosis on chemotherapy."
