Beijing strains responsible for spread of Russian drug-resistant infections

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers have elucidated the epidemiology of drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis strains in a hard-hit region of Russia.

Olga S. Toungoussova and colleagues at University of Oslo, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo, Northern State Medical University in Archangel Oblast, Russia, and the Archangel Regional Tuberculosis Dispensary investigated the background of drug-resistant TB strains in Archangel patients.

The Beijing Mycobacterium tuberculosis genotype is responsible for a high proportion of resistant TB cases in the Archangel Oblast, Toungoussova and coauthors found.
