Study: BP cuffs hold antibiotic-resistant bacteria

A new study entitled "Single Use Barriers for Blood Pressure Cuffs" revealed that bacteria, including variants resistant to standard antibiotics, were routinely found on blood pressure cuffs.

The study was conducted by Stanley R. Webb, PhD, associate professor of biology at Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia.

Antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Staph aureus, and heterotrophs were among the bacteria found on the cuffs. These bacteria can cause life threatening nosocomial infections, especially in people with weakened immune systems.
