CB-18 treatment has little impact on smear sensitivity

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers in North and South America have cast doubts on the utility of a special detergent used to treat smear specimens from suspected tuberculosis patients.

"C₁₈ -carboxypropylbetaine (CB-18) is a zwitterionic detergent that helps to compensate for the innate buoyancy of mycobacteria, potentially enhancing recovery by centrifugation," explained Cherise P.
