No new Louisiana cases reported

For the first time in over 5 months, Louisiana health officials are reporting no new human cases of West Nile virus in the state.

Health officials had been saying that the Louisiana outbreak appeared to be nearing an end. Officials, however, were not quite ready to declare the outbreak over.

The total number of West Nile virus cases since the outbreak began in Louisiana in the summer is 323, with 19 deaths.

David W. Hood, Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary, said the possibility remained that some cases might still be detected.
