Incidence and cost of severe sepsis in U.S. children

Severe sepsis is a major health problem in young children, with more than 42,000 cases and 4,400 associated deaths per year in the United States, according to a new study.

Writing in the first issue for March 2003 of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Scott Watson, MD, MPH, of the department of critical care medicine, University of Pittsburgh, along with five associates, pointed out that this incidence results in the use of an estimated 1.3 million hospital days annually at a cost of $1.97 billion (adjusted to 2001 dollars.)
