Writing in the first issue for March 2003 of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Scott Watson, MD, MPH, of the department of critical care medicine, University of Pittsburgh, along with five associates, pointed out that this incidence results in the use of an estimated 1.3 million hospital days annually at a cost of $1.97 billion (adjusted to 2001 dollars.)
