This infection "is lethal in humans," according to a recent study from California.
"A reproducible murine model was established by lumbar intrathecal injection of Coccidioides immitis arthroconidia," explained P. Kamberi and colleagues at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
After infection, "cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were obtained by cisternal puncture" for examination, they said. "Lethal infection developed in all mice given 10-60 colony-forming units (cfu)."
