TB at highest levels in Romania for 27 years

Romania is faced with the worst outbreak of tuberculosis in more than a quarter-century, with six people dying each day from the disease, a government doctor says.

Paul Stoicescu, who leads a lung disease unit at the Romanian Health Ministry, said poverty and people neglecting their health were the main causes of the disease. He said most cases occurred in poor areas in the southeast of the country.

The rate of tuberculosis is at its highest level in 27 years, he said, with about 82 new cases reported every day, of which more than 50 are contagious. Some 2,100 people died last year from the disease.
