Virus-associated pulmonary edema linked to left ventricular failure in children

According to a study from Taiwan, "Epidemics of enterovirus 71 infections caused the rapid death of many children in Malaysia in 1997 and in Taiwan in 1998. Pulmonary edema occurred in most of the fatal cases and was considered to be neurogenic. The role of the heart was rarely investigated before."

Y.C. Fu and colleagues conducted a prospective study of two groups of children admitted to an intensive care unit for enterovirus infection. The children were hospitalized between January 1998-January 2001. Five boys and six girls with pulmonary edema comprised Group I. Their mean age was 22.8 months.
