SARS epidemic is as big a threat as terrorism is to economy

A new global risk-perception survey shows that the SARS epidemic currently rates at a similar level to terrorism, cigarettes, pollution, and environmental disaster as a major perceived threat around the world. But people regard unemployment and unprotected sex with a new partner as even greater threats to their well-being.

Respondents were asked to rate the threat or risk posed to themselves and/or their loved ones by 30 named risky activities and potential threats. "Making a 3-hour car trip from your home" scored the lowest of all the risks among 570 respondents from around the world.
