Circulating inflammatory mediators predict shock, mortality in febrile patients

"The host response to microbial infection is associated with the release of inflammatory mediators. We hypothesized that the type and degree of the systemic response as reflected by levels of circulating mediators predict morbidity and mortality, according to the invasiveness of microbial infection," wrote A.B.J. Groeneveld and colleagues, Free University of Amsterdam, in the journal Clinical Immunology.
