Cidofovir effective but toxic for adenovirus-infected patients

Cidofovir is effective but toxic for stem cell graft recipients with posttransplant adenovirus infections.

"Adenovirus is an important cause of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and there is no established therapy," scientists in Sweden explained. "Cidofovir has in vitro efficacy against adenovirus."

In a recent study published in the journal Bone Marrow Transplantation, P. Ljungman and coauthors at Huddinge University Hospital "performed a retrospective analysis of 45 patients treated with cidofovir for adenovirus from 10 centers."
