Few signs of vigilance at U.S.-Canada border; no thermometers

As Toronto works to contain a second SARS outbreak 90 miles to the north, there are no signs of heightened vigilance at the border checkpoint in Buffalo, New York.

Travelers entering the United States from Canada's largest city are not getting their temperatures checked by mask-wearing health workers - standard practice in Hong Kong and other Asian border points.

Nevertheless, U.S. Customs officials say border agents here are quietly on the lookout, with gloves and surgical masks at the ready. Agents' training has been through written instructions to spot signs of severe acute respiratory syndrome, "difficulty breathing, fever, that kind of thing,"...
