First echovirus type 13-associated aseptic meningitis cases reported in Spain

The first cases of aseptic meningitis (AM) associated with echovirus type 13 have been reported in Spain.

"Echoviruses are the commonest cause" of AM, scientists there explained.

"Echovirus type 13 (EV-13) was the second enterovirus serotype associated with different local outbreaks of AM in Spain between February and October 2000," according to G. Trallero and colleagues at the National Center for Microbiology in Madrid. "It was the first time that an epidemic AM caused by this virus was recognized in Spain."
