"Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are implicated in the intracellular killing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and their expression is modulated by interleukin-4 (IL-4) in vitro," explained Gael Fenhalls and colleagues at the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa and GlaxoSmithKline Research and Development in Stevenage, the United Kingdom.
IL-4 reduces the expression of several TLRs in vivo as well, Fenhalls and coauthors found.
