Septic Shock

Mortality decreases while frequency increases

Although the crude mortality rate for septic shock is decreasing, its frequency is increasing, with more multiresistant bacterial strains involved, according to a large study by French biomedical scientists of 100,544 intensive care unit (ICU) admissions from 22 hospitals over 8 years, from 1993 to 2000.

Writing in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Djillali Annane, MD, PhD, of the Service de Reanimation Medicale, Hopital Raymond Poincare, Paris, along with three associates, pointed out that the annual frequency of septic shock increased from 7 to 9.7 patients per 100 ICU admissions from 1993 to 2000.
