Active case-finding needed to identify HIV patients with TB in Africa

Active case-finding is needed to improve identification of HIV patients coinfected with tuberculosis in Africa.

"HIV markedly increases the risk of tuberculosis," scientists explained.

J. Nachega and colleagues at the University of Witwatersrand "implemented active tuberculosis case-finding in a prevention of mother-to-child transmission program in South Africa."

"Of 438 tuberculin-tested HIV-infected patients, 49% had a reaction greater than or equal to 5 mm induration," test results showed.
